India has successfully tested the first ‘Bhargavastra’ counter-drone micro missile for the Indian Army and handed it over to the Army.

Bhargavastra Missile

India has achieved another milestone in defence technology with the successful test of its first indigenous counter-drone micro missile, named ‘Bhargavastra’. Developed in a joint effort between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and private defence firms, this groundbreaking weapon system marks a significant advancement in the country’s anti-drone combat capabilities.

The Bhargavastra micro missile is specifically designed to neutralise enemy drones, which have become an increasing threat in the modern battlefield. In recent years, drones have been deployed for reconnaissance, surveillance and even explosive delivery. This new innovation aims to provide the Indian Army with a state-of-the-art solution to effectively counter such threats.

State-of-the-art features

The Bhargavastra system possesses a compact and lightweight design, which enables it to be launched from man-portable platforms as well as vehicle-mounted systems. Equipped with advanced sensors and artificial intelligence-driven targeting, this micro missile is capable of tracking and destroying fast-moving drone targets with precision.

During the trials conducted at a classified range, Bhargavastra successfully intercepted multiple drone targets, including swarms of drones, in various scenarios. Defence officials said the system demonstrated impressive  agility and accuracy even in challenging weather conditions.

Strategic Importance

The launch of Bhargavastra is in line with India’s growing emphasis on self-reliance in defence under the ‘Make in India’ initiative. With the increasing use of drones in asymmetric warfare, the system is expected to strengthen the country’s defensive posture on sensitive borders and critical installations.

Experts believe that Bhargavastra has the potential to be a game-changer in drone defence technology, not only for the Indian Army but also for the export market. “This is a testament to India’s technological prowess and commitment to countering emerging threats. Bhargavastra is a step towards ensuring operational readiness in modern warfare,” a senior official said.

Next steps

After the successful trials, further trials will be conducted to verify the effectiveness of Bhargavastra in various combat scenarios. The Indian Army is also exploring the possibility of integrating the system with existing air defence units to enhance its overall effectiveness.

With the evolving global defence scenario, the development of indigenous technologies like Bhargavastra highlights India’s dedication to strengthening its security and achieving strategic autonomy. This innovation not only safeguards national interests but also positions the country as an emerging player in cutting-edge military technology.
