A strong and eloquent voice in the lively Queens neighbourhood of New York continues to spark discussions, subvert hierarchies of power, and provide representation to working-class groups that are frequently disregarded in political hallways. That voice belongs to Jessica Ramos, a state legislator, labour activist, and unrepentant leftist who is quickly emerging as a key player in New York politics.

Politicians are not like Jessica Ramos. Her political career is firmly anchored in her identity, upbringing, and steadfast dedication to social and economic justice. She was born and raised in Queens to Colombian immigrant parents. Whether it’s organising renters, joining union workers on picket lines, or confronting high-ranking state officials with unreserved candour, she doesn’t hesitate to get her hands dirty.

From Queens to Albany: The Rise of a Changemaker

When she defeated incumbent Jose Peralta in 2018, Ramos created a stir. Peralta was a member of the divisive Independent Democratic Conference (IDC), a group of renegade Democrats that sided with Republicans to thwart progressive legislation. Her campaign was propelled by neighbourhood support, grassroots enthusiasm, and a resounding message: New Yorkers want leaders who prioritise people before politics.

Since then, she has become a significant voice in the New York State Senate, serving as the representative for the 13th district, which is a diverse region that includes communities like Elmhurst, Corona, and Jackson Heights. These are working-class communities that were severely impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak and are primarily immigrant. Even if it meant going up against her own party, Ramos has never hesitated to speak truth to power.

A Champion for Workers

Prior to running for office, Ramos was the communications director for SEIU Local 32BJ, a significant labour union, and the director of Latino media for Mayor Bill de Blasio. Her political DNA is still heavily influenced by her labour history.

Ramos has established herself as one of the most powerful labour voices in Albany, whether she is fighting for the rights of gig workers, farmworkers, or asking for better pay and working conditions for home health aides and delivery workers. She is a favourite among worker advocates because of her support for the “Raise the Wage Act” and her appeals to stop exploitative practices in sectors like fast food and agriculture.

A significant turning point in the gig economy issue was reached in 2023 when she co-authored legislation that made New York the first state to require a minimum wage floor for app-based delivery workers.

Speaking Her Mind — Even When It’s Uncomfortable

Ramos is unique not only because of the causes she supports but also because of the way she fights.

She speaks up. She is honest. Additionally, she doesn’t mind conflict, particularly when morals are involved.

She gained notoriety in 2024 when she openly chastised Governor Kathy Hochul over contentious budget choices, especially those that affected public school financing and low-income regions. Ramos maintained that housing, education, and transportation shouldn’t be sacrificed for tax advantages for billionaires. She is a progressive firebrand and a pain for party insiders because of her scathing remarks and refusal to curry favour with the establishment.

She has also adopted strong positions on matters such as climate justice, affordable housing, and NYPD monitoring. In order to finance public services and create a more equal city, Ramos has advocated taxing the ultra-rich on numerous occasions.

A Potential Mayoral or Congressional Candidate?

As the upcoming New York elections get near, political analysts are beginning to wonder: What will happen to Jessica Ramos next?

Her name has been mentioned as a possible contender for Congress or perhaps for the position of mayor of New York City. Her expanding following, media presence, and unwavering principles point to a leader getting ready for a larger platform, even though she hasn’t formally confirmed anything.

“I think about the impact I can make — not just the title I hold,” Ramos said candidly when asked if she is considering higher position in a recent interview. I won’t be shy if I can do better with a larger microphone.

That is the epitome of Jessica Ramos: genuine, grounded, and service-oriented rather than status-oriented.

The Road Ahead

Ramos is still negotiating the difficulties of being a progressive in a state where donor-driven agendas and centrist politics frequently hold the reins of power. However, she is taking a long-term approach, forming alliances, organising from the ground up, and making sure the most marginalised voices in her district are heard.

Jessica Ramos is a welcome reminder that politics can still be about purpose in a political environment where many voters are disillusioned. She is not only speaking for Queens; one brave stand at a time, she is moulding New York’s destiny.
