Hollywood star and activist George Clooney is doubling down on his call for President Joe Biden to step aside in the 2024 presidential election. In a recent CNN interview, Clooney revisited his controversial New York Times op-ed and drew parallels between political courage and the story of Edward R. Murrow, as portrayed in his new Broadway adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck.
The Academy Award-winning actor and seasoned political activist is sticking to his earlier demand that President Joe Biden withdraw from the 2024 presidential contest, a demand that at first sparked both praise and outrage from people of all political persuasions.
Clooney recently discussed the motivations behind his now-famous July op-ed in The New York Times, in which he pushed the Democratic Party to choose a new candidate, in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper. Clooney’s Broadway debut in the stage version of Good Night and Good Luck was also discussed during the interview. The 63-year-old Hollywood veteran made a strong comparison between American political bravery and journalistic integrity, especially that of the play’s main character, Edward R. Murrow.
A Bold Statement Revisited
Clooney told Tapper, “It wasn’t an easy thing to say, but it was something I believed needed to be said,” in reference to his contentious opinion piece.
Clooney expressed his enthusiasm and respect for President Biden in the article, highlighting his achievements amid a contentious first term. But he said that the survival of the Democratic Party depends on its capacity to field a candidate who has the zeal and vision to bring people together and defeat the most likely Republican opponent in the general election.

Echoes of Murrow
When Tapper made a connection between Clooney’s political position and the moral fortitude of journalist Edward R. Murrow, who Clooney played in the 2005 movie Good Night, and Good Luck, the discussion became moving. Dramatising Murrow’s historic overthrow of Senator Joseph McCarthy during the height of the Red Scare, the film has now been turned into a Broadway show thanks to Clooney’s artistic control.
Considering the broadcaster’s courage, Clooney remarked, “Murrow had everything to lose.” His reputation, his career, and possibly even his safety. However, he persisted in opposing what he recognised to be wrong.
George Clooney went on to say that Murrow’s story is still very important today, particularly in a time when political strategy and party devotion sometimes eclipse truth and accountability.
A Voice in Hollywood with Political Weight
Politics has never been something George Clooney has avoided.
