In a major boost to India’s agricultural exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has facilitated the first-ever export consignment of 12 metric tonnes of Fortified Rice Kernel Export (FRK) from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica. This landmark event marks an important milestone in India’s journey towards expanding its global footprint in the nutrition and food fortification sector.
A Step Toward “Kuposhan Mukt Bharat”
This export aligns with the visionary programme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi — “Kuposhan Mukt Bharat” (Malnutrition-Free India) — which is being implemented under the Poshan Abhiyan. Through this initiative, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) distributes fortified rice across the country, aiming to combat malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies.
By exporting FRK to Costa Rica, India has successfully connected its domestic nutrition mission with global food security objectives, demonstrating how local innovations can serve international health goals.
Chhattisgarh’s Role in Global Nutrition Trade
Fortified Rice Kernel Export
The State of Chhattisgarh has been making consistent efforts to promote agricultural exports, particularly rice and fortified rice products. This successful export highlights the state’s growing contribution to the global supply chain for nutrition-enriched food.
Farmers, millers, and exporters from Chhattisgarh are now gaining international recognition, opening up new opportunities in the value-added food export segment. The export to Costa Rica not only boosts the state’s economy but also reinforces its image as a hub for innovation-driven agriculture.
APEDA’s Continued Support for Value-Added Exports
During the flag-off event, APEDA Chairman Shri Abhishek Dev congratulated all stakeholders involved in achieving this milestone. He emphasized that exporting fortified rice from India strengthens the nation’s agricultural export portfolio while reaffirming its commitment to science-based nutrition solutions.
“The export of fortified rice kernel export from India not only expands our export potential but also supports the global fight against malnutrition,” said Shri Dev.
“APEDA will continue to assist exporters in accessing new markets for fortified and value-added food products.”
The President of The Rice Exporters Association of Chhattisgarh (TREA-CG), Shri Mukesh Jain, expressed gratitude towards APEDA for its support and confirmed that new destinations for FRK exports are already being explored. He also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between government bodies and exporters to further strengthen Chhattisgarh’s agricultural export capabilities.
What Is Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK)?
Fortified Rice Kernel (FRK) is a scientifically developed food product created by blending rice flour with essential micronutrients such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. The mixture is then extruded and molded into rice-like grains, which are later mixed with regular rice at a fixed ratio (usually 1:100).
This process enhances the nutritional value of rice — a staple food for millions — without altering its taste, appearance, or cooking properties. FRK plays a vital role in tackling hidden hunger, which refers to micronutrient deficiencies that often go unnoticed but have serious health impacts.
Strengthening India’s Agricultural Export Ecosystem
The export of fortified rice kernel export from Chhattisgarh to Costa Rica is not just a trade achievement — it’s a testament to India’s growing technological prowess in food processing and fortification. It reflects the synergy between central agencies like APEDA, state governments, and private industry players who are working together to promote sustainable agricultural growth and nutritional well-being.
By entering the international market with FRK, India has sent a strong message of commitment to global food security, innovation, and public health. This move also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 2: Zero Hunger and Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.

A Milestone for India’s Nutrition Export Journey
The successful flag-off of the first Fortified Rice Kernel export from Chhattisgarh represents a new chapter in India’s agri-export story. As India continues to diversify its export basket with high-quality, nutritious, and value-added products, initiatives like these will pave the way for greater international trust in Indian agri-brands.
With sustained efforts from APEDA, the Government of Chhattisgarh, and exporters, India is set to emerge as a global leader in fortified food exports, ensuring that both domestic and international communities benefit from its nutritional advancements.
